What I've Learned
Throughout this semester I've learned so much about different cultures that I never knew before. While reading The Kite Runner I learned about Afghanistan culture, the depreciation of women and how they are treated compared to men. This helped me appreciate how good we have it living in Canada, equal rights are often taken for granted. I found it very interesting learning about the native people and the story of how there land was taken while watching the documentary 8th Fire and reading The Rez Sisters. The symbolism used in The Rez sisters made it appear that white people had it so much better in life with fancy thing such as paved roads and toilets. This helped me understand more about life on the reserves, the quality of life the natives have is not anywhere as good as other Canadians. I learned that most reserves have poor water quality, to a point where they shouldn't be consuming it but they have to in order to survive. Throughout reading some of these texts I've gained a whole new perspective on what is really going on in the world. The most important thing I've learned this semester is to treat others with respect whether they are white, black, or native, everyone should have equal rights and be treated the same.

These are very good points Lauren. When I think about all of the other places in this world where I could live, or the culture that I was born into, I feel very fortunate and blessed that it was this one. It may not be perfect, but I rarely feel limited by my gender and race. This freedom is very easy to take for granted, and it is important for us to understand how other people in the world live, so that we can appreciate what we have, and try to improve the lives of others.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you Lauren, this makes me feel so grateful for where I live and the opportunities I get on a daily basis, compared to Natives. This is an excellent point, as many people don't realize how awfully the Natives live. I cant imagine having to live in a community without clean water, a toilet and a bad quality home. After reading this I feel much more appreciative of the things I have.
ReplyDeleteI like that you included everything in this blog about what you've learned from each unit. I like that you took away that everyone should be treated equally with the same rights. There are in some cases examples of inequality throughout the world and it's unfortunate not every one can have the same mindset as you. Growing up were you exposed to all different types of cultures and rights, and this just opened up your mind to the depth of it all? Also, is this something you are normally interested in?
