Blog #2: Most important thing you have learned from our studies this semester
The most important thing that I have learned this semester would be how bad we have treated the First Nations. I've also learned that when it comes to a topic like that where different lifestyles and different cultures are involved you hear many different stories and opinions on what has happened between the different cultures. I also learned that the First Nations get treated a lot different than we do. They aren't accepted everywhere they go, we learned a bit about how it is sometimes hard for an aboriginal to get a job because of their background. I think that if we gave them a chance at the lifestyle we have they could potentially become great people, people that we could accept for who they really are. The different stereotypes for Aboriginals really threw me off because most stereotypes on Aboriginals are negative, but there are also good ones. Since it is near the end of the semester, my outlook on the relationship between us and the Aboriginals has definitely changed, but I feel that somewhere in the future the Aboriginals could be a positive change for us.

I agree we have greatly mistreated the Aboriginal people by acting like they are secondary citizens instead of human beings. I wish they could be treated like the rest of us instead of like second hand citizens. I also agree that if we treated the Aboriginal people like everyone else it would benefit us all by combining our cultures. The stereotypes I came across this semester were also quite shocking. I didn't know we still acted this way to the Aboriginal people. I thought that White culture and Aboriginal culture fixed all of the issues they had a long time ago.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you Ms. Sheppard. I was also unaware of how negatively Canadians were treating and still are treating Aboriginal people. This course has broadened my perspective on who we really are culturally in Canada. I have a similar approach to the future of First Nations people. I think that with the help of the government and Canadian people as a whole, we can create a strong relationship which will result in jobs and a better life for Aboriginal people.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Canadians have treated the Aboriginal people and are still treating them very negatively. This course has showed us a different perspective on Aboriginal people and that they could live a normal life like we do in Canada. After reading The Rez Sisters and watching 8th Fire, I didn't know that we acted this way towards the Aboriginal people and the many stereotypes be put against them. Taylor you made a good point in your blog.
