Most important thing learned this semester
I think the most important thing I learned this semester is that American Culture is prevalent everywhere. Throughout the semester we have read about Natives, Afghans, and people of other cultures such as German and African-American. During all of these texts, there is examples of how American culture has affected these people. "The Red Convertible", "Moving Camp Too Far", and The Rez Sisters all show us how American culture has affected from Natives now eating more commercial foods, to playing bingo on their reserves. The Kite Runner demonstrates that Afghans buy American products like Coke and Western movie. Lastly, "German, Jewish and Neither" and "Everyday Use" shows us how people change their name/identity to become a part of the American Culture. Before this semester, I didn't think that America had such an impact on the world, but so many people are affected by the culture, whether it's products or changing yourself to seem like more a part of it. This is scary because it makes me feel like America has control over everyone and if they really wanted, everything.

From someone who came from another country, I would love to hear about your personal perspective on how America influenced you in your native England - TV, music, literature, celebrities, McDonalds??
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. i can see how american culture will soon take over. I can also see this starting to happen in Canada as well with our reserves.
ReplyDeleteI see where you are coming from and this is an excellent point. It seems that America is forcing it's culture upon everyone else and wants everyone to live exactly the way they live because they are scared of people who seek a different lifestyle and think there's is the only right one.
