What I've Learned in English 3U..........

Over this semester, I learned about the prevalent information about different cultures, religions and life styles of multiple countries and reserves around the world. One that I really enjoyed was the Afghanistan culture. Mainly because it is SO different than the life we fortunately live here in Canada. While reading The Kite Runner I was almost in awe at some of the things Hassan and Amir had endured in the young years of their life, and it only got worse before it could ever get better while growing up. Learning about these two young boys and the horrifying truth about what goes on in some countries , I came to the realization of how lucky I am to live in the country I do. I always say I'm leaving Canada as soon as I have my life set for me. I always wanted to move for good but after this semester I decided on travelling..Becoming more aware that is it not only Afghanistan that has these traumatizing events going on makes me more interested as to the history and present states of some of the countries in the world. The native background also was an interest to me. I just did an anthropology end of the year assignment about teenage suicide and one of the statistics read suicide rates among Inuit and Native teenagers are 5-7 x more than Canadian and American teenagers. I found this interesting after learning about the way they live their lives on reserves and the evident issue of inequality, prejudice, racism, alcohol and drugs. Teenagers have a rough time in these years of youth mainly with identity crisis, having all of these stereotypes and family history of all of these issues on the reserve these Native teenagers are raised to think they can't change the way they have to live, then falling into things such as trouble with the law and drugs and alcohol. This leads to many psychological and social barriers and lost hope.

  1. I agree with you Yaz, I also wasn't very aware of all the traumatizing events young children were forced to endure while living in Afghanistan. I now understand that these horrific topics we have read about in The Kite Runner such as rape really do occur still to this day. I feel that I learned so much about cultures this semester, and I also appreciate Canada much more after reading the novels and understanding how good we all really have it living here. I also was very unaware of what all the Natives went through living in Canada and I learned that everyone should be treated as equals no matter their skin colour or where they are from.
