What Is The Most Important Thing You Have Learned From Our Studies/Texts This Semester?
I think the most important thing that I have picked up on this entire semester is being open and accepting to other cultures and religions. One of the biggest texts that I enjoyed learning about was the kite runner. This book was definetly one of the best books I could be exposed to because of the strong messages it portrayed. It really allowed you to open up to such a powerful culture and understand more about the Muslim religions. A lot happens and is expected from the people of Afghanistan, that people of other cultures should be aware of. Also you can realize specific struggles some face throughout their lives in this book. Going back into time, and coming from the Sikh religion, in the past both Muslims and Sikhs have had a long lasting conflict. Learning from our history and through stories, I had an understanding that the Sikh religion is not in any way related and similar to the Muslim religion by prayers we do and traditional cermonies we have. However by reading this book It gave me a wide exposure to how women where and still are treated and in a way it can be related back to Sikh women in the past. Although people in today's society compare Sikh and Muslims as the same kind, its important to show how different we are from them, but to also share the possible similarities we have. Personally this book is able to provide an outstanding amount of detail about culture and its one thing that should be continued to be studied as students should be exposed to other cultures asides from their own.
I agree. Hosseini wrote this right before 911, and this novel became even more important in its aftermath. In an effort to keep the nation safe, Americans went on high-alert and lumped Middle-Eastern and South Asian groups together, and treated them with suspicion. We need to understand that there are differences between ethnic groups, and also some remarkable similarities with our religions. By being open-minded and learning more about one another, we can hopefully become more tolerant!
