England-The Home Land

Before anything else what I see myself as is English. There are many possible reasons for this but here are the main three that come to mind sport, place of birth, and what everyone else sees you as. First sport, I love playing football (soccer), watching rugby, and watching formula one. These are all sports and one autosport that are very big in England, so because I do them rather frequently they make me feel English. Secondly I was born in Redhill in England and lived in various places around England for the first seven years of my life. So when I think of home that is where I go back to mentally just because that is where I spent my younger years. Just because of this reason alone is the biggest connection that mentally I feel connect back to England. Finally what everyone else sees you as, when your from different parts of the world people see you as something no matter what you actually are, for example if you are from the southern USA people immediately think that you are a farmer or a red neck. What people immediately assume when you say that you are from England is that you are classy, honorable, chivalrous person. I am fine with that being the first thing people assume about me, and it is a lot easier to explain to people than trying to explain that I don't live in an igloo and ride a polar bear to school. In conclusion the simple answer is I just feel like I belong more there than I do here.

  1. Your ideas of the stereotypes of English people forgot to include...bad teeth (insert Austin Powers joke here). I grew up in Northern Ontario, and although it is the same province sometimes it seems like a world away. I was so lost when I moved to Brantford and felt like I was a foreigner - people made fun of me for everything I did and wore! But when I think of "home", I think of living across from a true forest that stretched hundreds of miles to nowhere, and black bears breaking into our homes to raid our fridges. Growing up in different places can make you stronger, or it can result in a serious identity crisis. I love that you are keeping the things you are passionate about, while embracing new opportunities here. A strong work-ethic is never out of style!

  3. I understand how you feel a certain connection to your childhood home, its something you can't pin point, the whole culture molds you into you. Since, i've moved from my home for 14 years, I also refer to it as "oh back home" which i always think it isn't my home anymore so why call it home. I believe its because of how much its influenced me, it is home because its in a huge part of me.
